PhD opportunity in Law at the University of Ottawa within the NeuroSpeech project, led by Professor Jennifer A Chandler. The project is an interdisciplinary investigation of the human rights implications of communication neuroprostheses and related neurotechnology, bringing together expertise across law, ethics, philosophy, neuroscience, neuroengineering, brain-computer interfaces, speech-language pathology, neuroimaging, neurophysiology, neurolinguistics, science and technology studies, sociology, disability theory, clinical neuroscience, and neurodegenerative conditions.

The proposed doctoral research will focus on disability theory, human rights, and legal/regulatory issues for communication neurotechnologies. The work includes qualitative empirical methods and collaboration with people with communication impairments. This is a strong fit for applicants interested in the legal, ethical, and societal dimensions of emerging neurotechnology.

Eligibility highlights: a completed LLM (or equivalent law degree meeting University of Ottawa standards) with an excellent academic record; strong legal research and writing skills; initiative and motivation. Publication experience is not required, though it is an advantage. An interest in brain-computer interfaces or other neurotechnology is important, and the ability to read technical literature is expected. University of Ottawa doctoral language requirements apply.

Funding: a stipend is available from the NeuroSpeech project to support the PhD. The University of Ottawa Faculty of Law also mentions internal admission scholarships and other donor-funded scholarships for LLM and PhD students.
