About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Bordeaux (Talence, France) in collaboration with BRGM (French Geological Survey) through the LCA-SUB project funded by France 2030.
The project focuses on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) for mining-related systems, with particular attention to water use, land use, biodiversity, ecosystem impacts, mining footprint, and the relationship between carbon footprint and planetary boundaries.
Research activities include developing and validating generic LCIA methods for mining and refining activities, building GIS-based methods for water footprint and water scarcity assessment, studying mineral supply chains for lithium and battery metals, and comparing French versus international sourcing scenarios. The work is interdisciplinary and connects environmental science, materials science, earth science, chemical engineering, and sustainability assessment.
The PhD is hosted by the CyVi Group at the Institute of Molecular Sciences (ISM), Université de Bordeaux, with possible stays at BRGM in Orléans and with international partners. The contract is for 36 months and the gross monthly salary is €2300.
Eligible candidates should have a Master 2 in environmental sciences, chemistry, materials, mining, metallurgy, sustainable resource management, or a related field. Experience or strong interest in LCA, material flows, water/land management, sustainability assessment, programming (especially Python), and raw materials challenges is highly valued. Strong English skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment are important.
