About this position

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in Mass Timber Structural Systems and Wood Materials at Penn State University (University Park, PA, USA). The positions are based in the Timber Structures Lab across the Department of Architectural Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Research will focus on experimental evaluation and design of timber structures, including: (1) experimental testing of timber-timber composite panels and components, (2) modeling the behavior of composite timber elements and connections, and (3) material evaluation of wood and engineered wood products. Students will work with Dr. Tyler Hull and collaborate with industry partners, with access to large-scale structural testing in the new Aramco High Bay Structural Testing Laboratory.

Funding includes full tuition coverage plus a competitive stipend. The expected start date is June–September 2027. Application review begins 2026-11-02 and continues until the positions are filled.

To apply, submit the lab prospective-students form with a CV, unofficial bachelor's and master's transcripts, a letter of interest (max 2 pages), and contact information for two referees.
