About this position

Stockholm University is recruiting a PhD student in Materials Chemistry within Chemical Recycling of Plastics in the group of Assistant Professor Konstantinos Parkatzidis (supervision/contact also includes Prof. Niklas Hedin for department contact).

The project is centered on polymer chemistry, polymer science, materials chemistry, catalysis, carbon materials, and the chemical recycling of plastics. The successful candidate will work on the synthesis and characterization of polymeric and carbon-based materials and catalysts, study catalytic activity using model molecules, and translate the findings toward plastic depolymerization and sustainable chemical transformations.

This is a newly established research group focused on sustainable polymer chemistry, so the position is especially suitable for candidates who want to help shape the direction of a new lab from the beginning. The post emphasizes strong motivation, initiative, independence, collaboration, and the ability to think analytically and creatively.

Eligibility: applicants must meet the general doctoral entry requirements at Stockholm University and the special requirements for materials chemistry. A relevant bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or physics is required, together with an independent project of at least 30 higher education credits at advanced level (or equivalent). Strong English proficiency is expected. Preferred backgrounds include polymer chemistry, polymer science, catalysis, chemical recycling of polymers, and carbon materials.

Funding/employment: the position is a fixed-term doctoral employment for up to four years of full-time doctoral education, with a fixed salary. The role may include up to 20% teaching/research/administration duties.

Application: apply via Stockholm University’s recruitment system/Varbi. Submit a personal letter, CV, and all requested attachments. Deadline: 2026-04-22.
