About this position
PhD position in Materials Science at CNRS in France, focused on advanced ceramic shell architectures for the investment casting of turbine blades and improved thermal shock resistance.
The project is hosted by the Institut de recherche sur les céramiques (IRCER), a joint research unit of CNRS and the University of Limoges, and is part of the REFFRACTEUR European Doctoral Network under Horizon Europe / MSCA. The 36-month programme is split between SAFRAN in Colombes and IRCER in Limoges, both in France.
Research topics include finite element method (FEM), thermomechanics, refractory materials, ceramic shell moulds, cluster architecture, crack initiation and propagation, digital twin development, and experimental validation of optimized solutions. The project aims to identify critical thermal gradient thresholds, define robust design rules, and develop predictive tools for high-throughput investment casting strategies.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Computational Methods in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong numerical skills in thermomechanics are expected, and experience with Abaqus or similar FEM software is a major advantage. Knowledge of materials science, experimental characterization, and ceramic materials is desirable. Excellent English is required; basic French is listed in the posting.
Deadline: 21 August 2026, 23:59 UTC. Apply through the official CNRS vacancy page or the linked Euraxess listing.
