About this position

Doctoral student in Materials Science at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, focused on the predictive design of 3D-shaped products based on pulp fibres.

This PhD project sits in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Division of Applied Chemistry, with research connected to the FibRe Centre for Lignocellulose-based Thermoplastics. The project combines materials science, mechanics, multiscale characterisation, modelling, and experimental analysis to understand how fibre properties, material structure, and processing conditions influence deformability, damage, spring-back, and shape retention in 3D forming processes.

Research aims to develop predictive design rules for transforming fibres into advanced sustainable products and to support alternatives to fossil-based plastics. The student will participate in advanced doctoral courses, contribute to publications and conference presentations, and collaborate with researchers from Chalmers, KTH, and industrial partners.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Fibre and Polymer Technology, Wood Technology, Engineering Physics, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Technology, or a related field; strong English communication skills; documented experience in experimental research, thesis work, or industrial projects related to materials, mechanics, manufacturing, polymers, fibre-based materials, or modelling; and the ability to analyse complex experimental data and work in multidisciplinary, international teams.

Preferred experience includes fibre-based materials, polymers, paper, packaging, sustainable material systems, mechanical testing, microscopy, image analysis, data analysis, finite element methods, and programming such as Python or MATLAB.

Funding: fully funded from the start. The appointment is for four years, extendable to five years with teaching duties up to 20%. Starting salary is 35,725 SEK/month (from May 1, 2026).

Application: submit the application in English via the online form on the vacancy page. Include CV, personal letter, a brief introduction and motivation, and bachelor’s and, if available, master’s thesis together with transcripts. Applications must be complete and submitted before the deadline.

Deadline: November 20, 2026.
