About this position

This funded PhD project combines computational mathematics, machine learning, computer vision, data analysis, data science, statistics, optimization, and signal processing to develop efficient, spatially-aware AI methods for hyperspectral imaging. The research aims to improve analysis of high-dimensional spectral images and support applications such as medical diagnosis and geophysical mineral exploration.
The project is part-funded by Renishaw Plc. The successful candidate is expected to spend time at Renishaw to generate real-world data and receive training on the company’s instruments and software. This industry collaboration is intended to ensure the methods are practical and tested on real data.
Eligibility: applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a First Class or high Upper Second Class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. A master’s degree would be advantageous. Applicants should also have a strong technical background and experience in mathematical methods. Non-UK applicants must meet the programme’s English language requirement by the application deadline.
Funding: the studentship is tenable for 4 years and covers tuition fees, an enhanced stipend of £23,805 per annum for 2026/7, and a training support budget. The studentship is open to both Home and International students, although international funding does not cover relocation to the UK, visa costs, or the UK healthcare surcharge.
