About this position

Uppsala University is advertising a fully funded PhD position in Media and Communication Studies at the Department of Informatics and Media in Sweden. The project sits in an international, interdisciplinary research environment and connects media and communication with digital society, information systems, and interaction design.

The doctoral research should examine how media and communication shape democracy, the public sphere, and citizenship in contemporary society. Possible empirical contexts include media companies and organizations, digital platforms, media audiences, communication technologies, and policy/regulation frameworks. The department emphasizes both qualitative and quantitative methods, and the project should be grounded in a clear theoretical framework, research questions, aims, methodology, data type, and timeline.

This is a 4-year full-time doctoral studentship (100% employment), with possible teaching and research administration duties of up to 20%. The position starts on 1 September 2026 (or as agreed) in Uppsala, Sweden.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a Master’s degree in Media and Communication Studies or a closely related field, or equivalent higher-education credits; documented independent research experience such as a Master’s thesis; documented experience with social science research methods; and very good English communication skills. Personal qualities such as collaboration, initiative, independence, and a critical, reflective, analytical approach are important.

Application materials: cover letter (max 500 words), two-page doctoral project plan in English, CV, certified transcripts and degree certificates, two recommendation letters, and copies of independent academic works or other relevant texts. Apply through Uppsala University’s recruitment system before 29 May 2026.
