About this position
Doctoral student opportunity in Medical Science at Lund University, Department of Experimental Medical Science, in the Microbial Evolutionary Genetics (MEG) Lab led by Johannes Cairns.
The project, “Predicting eco-evolutionary dynamics in a polymicrobial urinary tract infection model”, focuses on microbiology, microbial evolution, antimicrobial resistance, microbial interactions, biofilm biology, bioinformatics, and statistical modelling. The work combines longitudinal experiments in planktonic and biofilm systems with sequencing-based analysis of community composition, antibiotic dose-response experiments, resistance phenotyping, and quantitative data analysis in R and/or Python.
The doctoral student will work at BMC in Lund in a small interdisciplinary environment with close supervision and collaboration between experimental and computational researchers. The project is connected to the DDLS environment and includes collaboration with researchers at Lund University and other universities.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master’s degree (e.g. microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology), strong hands-on experimental microbiology experience, experience with polymicrobial or infection-relevant in vitro models, experience with antibiotic response or evolutionary experiments, and very good English. Experience with biofilm systems, experimental evolution, antimicrobial resistance, sequencing data, and quantitative microbial phenotyping is especially meritorious.
Funding/employment: fixed-term doctoral employment for four years at 100% with monthly salary according to the faculty salary scale.
Application: submit the application through Lund University’s recruitment system. Include a cover letter, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, and your Master’s thesis or equivalent independent research work.
Deadline: 2026-10-12.
