About this position
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), part of the Helmholtz Association, is advertising a PhD Student (f/m/d) position for experimental research on the microbiologically influenced corrosion of potential container materials for the storage of high-level radioactive material in a bentonite environment.
The work is based at the Institute for Resource Ecology and the Group Deep Biosphere in Dresden, Germany. The project focuses on how microbial activity, especially sulphate-reducing bacteria, may affect corrosion processes in clay rock and bentonite barriers used for final disposal of radioactive waste.
Research tasks include batch corrosion experiments under anoxic conditions, diffusion-cell experiments at different bentonite dry densities, and the determination of corrosion rates and mechanisms using spectroscopic and microscopic methods. The role also includes literature review, scientific writing, conference presentations, and mentoring student courses.
Applicants should have a very good university degree (Master/Diploma) in natural sciences, preferably in Chemistry, Biology, or Earth Sciences. Experience in experimental laboratory work is required. Strong motivation, initiative, and willingness to work with open radioactive materials in a radiation-controlled laboratory are important. Good knowledge of microbiological, chemical, and analytical methods is an advantage, as are strong English communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
The position is a structured PhD opportunity and offers salary and social benefits under TVöD-Bund, with possible classification up to salary group 13 depending on qualifications. Benefits include 30 days of paid holiday, a company pension scheme, flexible working hours, mobile working, and part-time suitability. The post is subject to project approval.
Application materials should be submitted through the online application system. The post requests a cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, and contact details of two references. The deadline is 13 October 2026 at 22:00 UTC.
