About this position

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden is advertising a PhD position in Microwave Diagnostics for Disaster Care (reference REF 2026-0469). The project sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, medical science, and signal processing, with a strong focus on microwave-based diagnostic systems for rapid triage and early detection of traumatic injuries in disaster and pre-hospital settings.

The research is hosted in the Department of Electrical Engineering, within the Division of Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering. The group works across biomedical electromagnetics, biomedical signals and systems, computer vision, and advanced signal processing. The project builds on prior clinical and CE-marked microwave diagnostic work for stroke and aims to develop next-generation technologies for emergency response, triage, and preparedness planning.

Research activities include electromagnetic modelling, antenna and RF system design, signal processing, experimental validation, sensor development, measurement systems, and algorithm design. The position is also part of the national DISASTER-CARE Graduate School in Disaster Medicine, offering interdisciplinary training linked to crisis, disaster, and wartime healthcare preparedness.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field; strong English and Swedish communication skills; solid knowledge of microwave systems, RF engineering, electromagnetic field theory, and computational electromagnetics. Experience in disaster care medicine, microwave-based detection methods, or machine learning is an advantage.

Funding and terms: the doctoral student position is fully funded from the start. It is a fixed-term appointment for four years, with the possibility of up to 20% teaching duties extending the employment to five years. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month (from May 1, 2026).

Application deadline: 29 October 2026. Applicants must submit the application in English as PDF files via the online application form, including a CV, personal letter, and bachelor’s thesis and, if available, master’s thesis with transcripts. Applications sent by email or incomplete applications will not be considered.
