About this position

PhD opportunity in quantum chemistry and variational quantum algorithms at ColibrITD in Paris, in collaboration with the DiTeQ team at the Laboratory Interdisciplinary Carnot of Burgundy (ICB, CNRS).

The project is a CIFRE PhD within the Tele-MAQ joint laboratory and focuses on molecular chemistry, variational quantum algorithms, VQE, adaptive ansätze, quantum chemistry, molecular vibrations, NISQ hardware, and error mitigation. The research aims to study the practical limits of VQE-type methods for molecular systems and to develop improved algorithmic strategies inspired by classical quantum chemistry.

Work will combine theory, numerical implementation, and experiments on quantum hardware, including IBM cloud-accessible quantum processors and industrial partners. Methodological topics include benchmarking molecular systems, ADAPT-VQE, hardware-efficient and chemistry-inspired ansätze, optimization strategies, barren plateau analysis, and noise reduction techniques such as zero-noise extrapolation and probabilistic error cancellation.

The candidate should hold a Master’s degree in quantum information, quantum algorithms, and/or quantum chemistry, and should have strong Python/scientific programming skills. The PhD student will be based in Paris, with regular travel to Dijon for interaction with academic supervisors.

Funding is described as a competitive package with salary and benefits. The application deadline is 2026-09-30. To apply, send a CV and cover letter to [email protected] with the subject “CIFRE PhD Thesis – TeleMAQ Project.”
