About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD on moss traits, bryophytes, fire ignitability, peatland, tundra, and vegetation-climate feedbacks. The project asks how moss functional traits influence fire ignition and fire dynamics in high-latitude ecosystems, including boreal peatlands and tundra, where warming, permafrost thaw, and increasing fire frequency are reshaping carbon storage and ecosystem functioning.

The PhD is embedded in the Plant Ecology and Nature Conservation group, within the Vegetation-Climate Feedbacks team at Wageningen University & Research. The work combines lab experiments, fieldwork, and remote sensing, with possible drone-based observations, vegetation surveys, environmental monitoring during and after fires, and analysis of global vegetation databases. The project aims to improve understanding of the functional role of bryophytes in fire dynamics and to support better fire risk assessments for vulnerable northern ecosystems.

Eligibility highlights include a completed MSc in ecology, environmental sciences, climate studies, or a related field, strong experimental design skills, good organization and communication, and excellent English at minimum C1 level. Experience with fire-related research is considered a plus.

Funding includes a fully funded PhD appointment, a tailored course program, and a salary from €3,204/month in year 1 rising to €4,051/month in year 4, based on a 38-hour week. The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration if performance is good.

The application deadline is 2 November 2026. Applicants must apply via the WUR vacancy page, submit a CV and motivation letter (maximum 3 pages total), and complete the mandatory online form linked in the post.
