About this position

PhD opportunity at CNRS / SIMaP, France in multifield electromagnetic levitation for the characterisation and processing of metallic materials.

The project is hosted by SIMaP – Science and Engineering of Materials and Processes, a multidisciplinary laboratory jointly administered by CNRS, University of Grenoble Alpes, and Grenoble INP. The PhD will be carried out within the IMEP-2 doctoral school at the University of Grenoble Alpes, with a speciality in Fluid Mechanics, Energy, Process Engineering.

The research is part of the ANR MultiMAGe project and focuses on coupling electromagnetic levitation with a DC magnetic field to study metals and alloys at high temperatures. The work aims to improve experimental control and understanding of droplet oscillations, internal fluid flow, thermal expansion, and the conditions under which convective transport can be reduced enough to enable reliable thermophysical-property measurements.

Planned work includes instrumentation improvement and automation of the levitation setup, high-speed imaging of droplet oscillations, investigation of destabilisation mechanisms under different magnetic-field strengths and orientations, and development/validation of procedures for measuring selected thermophysical properties under controlled thermal and electromagnetic conditions. Numerical modelling will support the experimental studies.

Required profile: strong knowledge of heat and mass transfer, a strong interest in experimental work, and good English. Helpful extras include prior experimental experience, basic magnetohydrodynamics, Python, and signal/image processing.

What's required
