About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Warwick in experimental physics and physics of unconventional antiferromagnets.
This funded project, supervised by Dr Max Birch in the Department of Physics and linked to Warwick’s Superconductivity and Magnetism Group, explores how noncollinear antiferromagnets and altermagnets can be sculpted into microscopic devices to reveal novel electronic transport phenomena. The research combines focused ion beam (FIB) fabrication, device engineering, and electrical transport measurements to investigate broken time-reversal symmetry, magnetic multipoles, spin splitting, nonlinear transport, diode-like responses, and strain-controlled magnetic order.
You will receive direct training in FIB device fabrication and transport experiments, including lock-in amplifier techniques. The project emphasizes creative experimental design, hands-on work, and the freedom to develop your own devices and experiments. Facilities include cryomagnet systems, collaboration opportunities with crystal growers, and potential links to synchrotron x-ray and neutron facilities, with international connections in Japan, the USA, and Germany.
Funding: fully funded for 42 months, with a UK-standard annual tax-free stipend of £21,830 rising with inflation, plus conference travel and consumables support. Some UKRI awards are available for international students.
Eligibility: applicants should have or expect at least an upper second-class BSc honours, MSci or MPhys, or equivalent in Physics or a related subject. No prior FIB experience is required. Non-native English speakers need IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
Location: Coventry, United Kingdom.
How to apply: contact Dr Max Birch to discuss the project and consult the University of Warwick Department of Physics postgraduate application page for further instructions.
