About this position

PhD opening in neurodegeneration at the Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE) in Bonn, Germany.

The project is hosted in the Vascular Neurology Research Group under Prof. Dr. Gabor Petzold and directly supervised by Dr. Natalie Beschorner. The research focuses on the glymphatic system, brain fluid transport, clearance of metabolic waste and neurotoxic proteins, and how impaired glymphatic function may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

The PhD student will work on experimental neuroscience, including study design, in vivo mouse experiments, analysis and interpretation of complex datasets, conference presentations, manuscript preparation, and collaboration in an interdisciplinary and international environment. The group also studies glymphatic influx and efflux pathways during ageing and neurodegenerative disease, with attention to genetic and environmental risk factors, advanced in vivo imaging, molecular biology, and human tissue analyses.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biomedical sciences, medicine, neuroscience, biology, or a related field; strong interest in research; excellent English; statistical analysis experience; and strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills. Experience with neurodegenerative mouse models and in vivo experimentation is desirable but not mandatory.

Deadline: 21 August 2026. Start as soon as possible, no later than 1 November 2026.

Apply by email to [email protected] or through the DZNE jobs page. Project questions can be sent to [email protected].
