About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Groningen in the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The position is part of the international QuNeCo project, a collaboration between universities in the Netherlands and Japan focused on next-generation neuromorphic computing, computer architecture, hardware acceleration, and computing-in-memory systems.

The research will cover the full hardware design flow: architectural exploration, algorithm–hardware co-design, RTL development, simulation, EDA-based evaluation, FPGA prototyping, and experimental validation. The project also explores emerging memory technologies such as SRAM, RRAM, MRAM, and FeRAM, and includes development of representative AI/neuromorphic applications.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related field. Strong skills in Verilog/SystemVerilog/VHDL, FPGA or RTL design, computer architecture, Python and/or C/C++, and familiarity with EDA tools are expected. Interest in energy-efficient AI hardware and excellent English communication skills are important.

This is a full-time PhD employment with a salary of €3,204–€4,051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The contract starts for one year and may be extended for three more years, subject to progress. The deadline is 31 October 2026 at 23:59 Dutch local time.

What's required

A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a closely related field is required. Applicants should have a strong background in computer architecture and digital hardware design, experience with Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL, familiarity with FPGA development or RTL design methodologies, knowledge of computer architecture, hardware accelerators, AI hardware, or neuromorphic computing, and programming experience in Python and/or C/C++. Experience with EDA tools such as Cadence, Synopsys, or Vivado is an advantage. Interest in emerging memory technologies and computing-in-memory architectures is desirable, along with excellent English communication skills and strong analytical, creative, independent research abilities.
