About this position
This PhD project at Coventry University focuses on developing novel kinetic models to decipher the binding mechanisms of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are critical targets in pharmacology and drug discovery. The research aims to map the complete binding pathways of GPCRs with G proteins and β-arrestins, investigating how the formation of early, transient complexes determines selectivity and signaling outcomes.
The project will employ advanced molecular dynamics simulations to model the entire binding process under various conditions, enabling the identification of dynamic factors that influence β-arrestin recruitment. These computational predictions will be validated experimentally through mutagenesis, functional assays, and BRET/FRET-based techniques in collaboration with established experimental partners.
This opportunity is timely, leveraging recent advances such as high-resolution structures of active and inactive GPCRs, G proteins, and β-arrestins, as well as improved GPU performance for large-scale simulations. The successful candidate will benefit from comprehensive research training, including technical, personal, and professional development, as part of Coventry University's Doctoral and Researcher College.
Applicants should hold at least a 2:1 degree in a relevant discipline, with strong academic performance and English language proficiency (IELTS 7.0 overall, minimum 6.5 in each component). Experience in computational biology, computational chemistry, or computer science is advantageous, as is prior involvement in scientific publications. The position is fully funded, covering tuition fees and providing a stipend.
To apply, candidates must submit a full application with supporting documents, a covering letter, and a 2000-word statement outlining their expertise and interest in the project. For further information, contact Dr G Deganutti at [email protected]. The application deadline is May 27, 2026.
