About this position

PhD position at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology (TU Freiberg), Germany, in the Institute of Numerical Mathematics and Optimization / numerical mathematics group led by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Aland.

The project focuses on numerical simulation, mathematical modeling, and finite element implementation for the growth of tumors and biofilms. The research combines mathematics, physics, computational mathematics, engineering mathematics, and high-performance computing to study the interaction of biological tissue with surrounding materials and to explore fundamental biophysical questions.

Typical tasks include developing new mathematical models, discretizing and implementing them in finite element code, and running numerical simulation studies in collaboration with experimental partners.

Applicants should have a diploma or master’s degree in Mathematics, Computational Engineering Science, Physics, or a related field with a highly competitive grade. Strong knowledge of numerical discretization methods for differential equations and advanced programming skills are expected, along with teamwork, communication skills, personal commitment, and strong motivation for real-world applications.

The position is fully funded and offers an annual salary of up to 63k Euro gross, plus social and health care benefits, flexible working hours, and support for conference/workshop travel.

Applications are accepted all year round. To apply, send a CV, transcript of studies with courses and grades, and ideally a copy of your last thesis to [email protected]. Shortlisting is based on grades, programming skills, and prior knowledge in numerical methods.
