About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Bath in a GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme project on olfactory genetics, diet, gut microbiota and cardiometabolic health.

This is a fully computational PhD using existing large-scale human cohort data. The project sits at the intersection of human genetics, nutritional epidemiology, microbiome science, bioinformatics, genomics, medical statistics, data science and linked electronic health record (EHR) analysis. The central question is whether variation in olfactory receptor genes is associated with dietary patterns, gut microbial features and cardiometabolic traits.

Supervision is by Associate Professor Guillaume Méric (University of Bath) and Associate Professor Kaitlin Wade (University of Bristol), with the studentship based at Bath and co-supervision from Bristol Medical School. The GW4 BioMed3 partnership also connects Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter and provides structured doctoral training, networking and a Broadening Horizons placement.

Funding: 4-year studentship covering tuition fees, a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/27, and up to £5,000 per annum for research training and support. Home and international students may apply, but international awards are limited and do not cover visa or healthcare surcharge costs.

Eligibility: Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class degree in medical sciences, computing, mathematics or the physical sciences. A lower second-class degree may be considered with a Merit or above at master’s level. Non-UK applicants must meet University of Bath English language requirements.

Deadline: 21 October 2026 at 17:00 GMT. Applications may close early if demand is high.

How to apply: Apply directly through the GW4 BioMed3 DLP online application form. You may apply for up to two projects and should submit only one application per candidate. Do not apply to Bath at this stage; a Bath study application is only needed if you later receive funding.
