About this position

PhD position at the University of Freiburg in the Electrochemical Biosensors Group on Optimization of Carbon Electrode Interfaces for Reagent-Free Electrochemical Detection at the Point of Need.

This research project focuses on developing robust carbon electrode interfaces for electrochemical biosensors and multi-analyte detection in human body fluids. The work combines surface engineering, biofunctionalization, anti-biofouling strategies, DNA-based electrode functionalization, multiplexed molecular assays, aptamer-based detection, and integration into sample-to-answer cartridges.

The position is part-time (80%) and fixed-term for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. Compensation is according to TV-L E13. The project is described as highly interdisciplinary and includes collaboration with academic and industrial partners, with a strong translational and medical device research focus.

Applicants should hold a Master of Science or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field. Experience with electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry and SWV, surface chemistry on gold or carbon, and simple organic synthesis is advantageous. The team is looking for someone structured, independent, meticulous, and motivated to learn new methods and contribute to a multidisciplinary environment.

Deadline: 30 September 2026. Apply with complete documents and reference number 00005133. For questions, contact Dr. Andreas Schreiber at andreas.schreiber@imtek.uni-freiburg.de.
