About this position

The University of Salford is offering a PhD opportunity focused on vocal communication in ring-necked parakeets (Psittacula krameri), based within the Environmental Research & Innovation Centre (ERIC). This project is ideal for candidates interested in ornithology, animal behaviour, and bioacoustics, and will involve research into the vocal communication strategies of these birds. The position is supervised by Amy Leedale, Lecturer in Zoology.

Eligible UK candidates are encouraged to apply for the University of Salford Widening Participation Scholarships, which provide comprehensive financial support including tuition fees, a competitive stipend, and a research budget. The scholarships aim to increase participation from underrepresented groups, with priority given to University of Salford graduates and those meeting specific widening participation criteria (such as certain postcodes, ethnic background, disability, first-generation status, mature students, or care-experienced/estranged students).

Applicants should have a strong academic background in biology, zoology, animal behaviour, or a related discipline. The application process involves submitting a research degree application by 30 January 2026, after which shortlisted candidates will be invited to complete a scholarship application and may be interviewed as part of the selection process. For more information or to discuss the project, prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Amy Leedale directly at [email protected].

For further details on the scholarships and application process, visit the University of Salford Doctoral School website. This is an excellent opportunity to join a vibrant research community and contribute to innovative research in animal communication and behaviour.
