About this position
PhD project at the University of Bath (working with the University of Bristol) on parental transmission of substance use, with a focus on developmental psychology, health psychology, epidemiology, public health, genetic analysis, and longitudinal cohort data.
This project is part of the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme (DLP), which is offering up to 17 studentships for entry in September 2026. The project examines whether substance use behaviours are passed from parents to children, and how genetic factors, parenting behaviours, and environmental influences may contribute. The student will work with ALSPAC and may also use additional datasets, combining advanced statistical analysis, intergenerational design, and qualitative interviews with parents to explore intervention acceptability.
Training includes advanced longitudinal data analysis, genetic analysis, qualitative methodology, Stata, R, participatory research, and co-design. The project can be shaped toward parent substance use disorder or general population use, and can focus on alcohol, tobacco, or illicit drugs.
Eligibility: applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in medical sciences, computing, mathematics, or the physical sciences. A lower second-class degree may be considered with a master's degree at Merit or above. Non-UK applicants must meet University of Bath English language requirements.
Funding: 4-year studentship covering tuition fees, a stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and up to £5,000 per year for research training/support. Open to Home and International students, with international awards limited to 30% and visa/health surcharge costs not covered.
Apply by 2026-10-21 via the GW4 BioMed3 DLP online application form. Informal enquiries: Dr Lindsey Hines ([email protected]). You may apply for up to two projects, but only one application per candidate.
