About this position
Wageningen University & Research is recruiting a PhD candidate for a project on PFAS removal with activated carbon in drinking water treatment. The research focuses on how water composition, natural organic matter (NOM), and activated carbon properties influence PFAS adsorption and breakthrough in realistic drinking water conditions.
You will work within the Chair Group of Environmental Technology and the Electrified Interfaces team at Wageningen University & Research, in close collaboration with Evides, one of the largest drinking water companies in the Netherlands. The project combines laboratory experiments, column studies, and data analysis to understand competitive adsorption of PFAS and NOM, identify key water quality indicators, and develop predictive tools for filter performance.
Research interests include environmental science, chemical engineering, civil engineering, chemistry, adsorption processes, water treatment, colloid and interface science, and environmental chemistry. The successful candidate will design and conduct batch and column experiments at environmentally relevant concentrations, analyse data, publish in international journals, and present at conferences.
Eligibility highlights: a completed MSc degree in Environmental Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field; experience with laboratory research and experimental design; strong analytical and quantitative skills; and English at C1 level. A recognised English proficiency certificate may sometimes be required.
The position is fully funded. Salary starts at €3,204 per month in year one and rises to €4,051 per month in year four, based on a 38-hour work week. The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration if performance is good.
Deadline: apply by 2026-10-27. To apply, use the vacancy page on the WUR website and submit a CV (max. 2 pages) plus a motivation letter (max. 1 page). Only applications submitted through the website will be considered.
