About this position

The International Doctorate Programme (IDK) Philology: Practices of Pre-Modern Cultures, Global Perspectives and Future Concepts is based at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) and operates in cooperation with the Elite Network of Bavaria. This interdisciplinary PhD programme offers a unique opportunity to explore philological practices across European, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian traditions, with particular attention to the Indian subcontinent and the Jewish and Arabic worlds in pre-modernity. The curriculum is designed to foster comparative research, examining similarities, differences, and continuities among diverse cultural and linguistic contexts.

Doctoral candidates benefit from a stimulating research environment that encourages innovative approaches and academic excellence. The programme encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Catholic Theology, Classics (Greek and Latin Studies), Computational Linguistics, Egyptology (JMU Würzburg), English Studies, German Literature (1400-1700), German Medieval Studies, History of Science & Scholarship, Indology, Jewish Studies, Legal History, Musicology, Protestant Theology, Romance Studies, and Sinology. The curriculum balances structured coursework with the flexibility needed for independent dissertation research, featuring both input and output phases (up to four semesters each) tailored to individual student needs.

A distinctive feature of the IDK is its integration of philological competencies with training in IT and digital humanities, particularly data literacy skills. This innovative approach prepares graduates for both academic and non-academic careers, enhancing their prospects for high-quality employment after degree completion. International guest lecturers and cooperative partners contribute to the programme’s global perspective, and additional support is available through the GraduateCenter and the International Office.

There are no tuition fees for this programme, but students must pay a semester contribution (basic fee of 85 EUR plus the Deutschlandticket). Funding opportunities are available within LMU Munich, including travel and completion grants. Accommodation support is provided for international doctoral candidates, with reasonably priced rooms in shared flats available in central Munich.

Applicants must hold a successful degree in one of the participating disciplines (Master's, 'Diplom', or teaching degree) and demonstrate fluency in German or English. Those without German proficiency are expected to acquire basic skills during their first year. The programme begins in the winter semester, and the application deadline is October 31, 2026. For further details and to submit your application, visit the IDK Philologie website.
