About this position

Karlstad University is advertising a PhD / doctoral studentship in Physical Chemistry within the Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences. The project focuses on renewable materials, molecular interactions, biomass conversion, green solvents, lignin, cellulose, and structure–property relationships in biomass-derived and lignin-rich materials.

The research is strongly computational and combines density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics, and multiscale modelling, with experimental validation where useful. The work examines how renewable feedstocks behave in different chemical environments, how solvent systems influence fractionation and solubilization, and how molecular structure affects properties such as UV shielding, antioxidant activity, solubility, and compatibility in formulations, films, and composites. Biocatalysis in biomass processing is also part of the project.

The position is based at Karlstad University in Sweden and is embedded in a collaborative research environment involving universities and industry partners, including work connected to the Mission 0 House project. The research group is funded by the Swedish National Space Board and the Knowledge Foundation.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must meet Swedish doctoral entry requirements and hold an advanced degree in chemistry or an equivalent subject, with an independent thesis relevant to physical chemistry. Strong preference is given to candidates with documented experience in computational chemistry, molecular modelling, simulations, academic writing, and English proficiency. Relevant coursework in physical chemistry, biochemistry, or computational chemistry is also valued.

Funding: this is a paid doctoral appointment, normally four years full-time, with possible extension up to five years if teaching or other duties are included. Salary follows the standard doctoral student salary scale under a local collective agreement.
