About this position

PhD position at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Department of Crop Production Ecology, in plant breeding, plant protection, insect pests, crop protection, entomology, and genetics.

The project is part of the SLU Grogrund initiative and focuses on the broad bean beetle (Bruchus rufimanus), a key pest of field bean. The research aims to understand the insect’s life cycle in the field and in storage, develop screening methods for infestations in breeding material, and contribute to DNA markers for resistance or tolerance that can support future plant breeding.

The position involves both research and coursework, with collaboration across SLU departments and with industry and stakeholders such as Lantmännen and NordGen. Laboratory and field work will take place in Uppsala and Alnarp, with possible additional field locations in Sweden.

Eligibility highlights: a second-cycle degree in agronomy, horticulture, plant breeding, plant biology or a related field; experience with statistical analysis; experience working with plants or insects in the field or greenhouse; strong interest in crop protection and crop breeding; and good English. Meriting experience includes crops/agriculture and a Swedish driving licence.

Funding: 4-year PhD employment with salary according to a local collective agreement and fixed salary steps. This is a full-time temporary position.

Deadline: 16 August 2026. Apply through the SLU recruitment portal and include CV, degree project, degree certificate, transcripts, references, and English documentation.
