About this position

The Cluster of Excellence GreenRobust at the University of Tübingen is inviting applications for a PhD position in plant immune receptor evolution at the Department of Plant Biochemistry, Center for Plant Molecular Biology (ZMBP).

The project, REVALUTION, focuses on re-evaluating ambiguous ligand–receptor interactions in an evolutionary framework. It combines evolutionary genomics, AI-guided structural modelling, and molecular and functional biology to discover novel Brassica immune receptors and understand ligand recognition and downstream signalling in RLP30/RE02-like receptors.

The successful candidate will join the research groups of Laura Medina-Puche and Andrea Gust and collaborate closely with the Koch/Walden group at the Centre for Organismal Studies (COS), Heidelberg. The position is available from January 2027 and is initially funded for three years, with the possibility of extension.

Applicants should hold an excellent Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline. The post also asks for a strong interest in plant immunity and evolution, proficiency in English, and practical experience in plant molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and microscopy.

To apply, submit a single PDF including a cover letter, summary of previous research experience, CV, certificates, and the contact details of two academic referees. Applications are due by 9 October 2026 and should be emailed to Dr. Andrea Gust or Dr. Laura Medina-Puche at ZMBP.

This is a research-focused PhD opportunity in a collaborative international environment with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and mentoring/career development opportunities.
