About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD in Predictive AI-Based Maintenance and Optimization of Building Energy Management Systems at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Trondheim, Norway.

The project is hosted in the Norwegian Center on AI for Decisions (aiD), a research initiative led by NTNU and SINTEF with partners from academia, industry, and the public sector. The research focuses on artificial intelligence, digital twins, building energy management systems, HVAC, predictive maintenance, building performance simulation, simulation-based inference, fault detection and diagnosis, and optimization.

This is a fully funded, three-year PhD position. The salary is normally NOK 550,800 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. The position is conditional on external funding and includes NTNU employee benefits and working capital for the project.

Applicants should have a relevant master’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical power engineering, or a related field, with strong academic results (B or better on NTNU’s scale or equivalent). Required language is good written and oral English. Preferred experience includes probabilistic modeling, Bayesian inference, deep learning, anomaly detection, EnergyPlus or IDA ICE, building automation systems, heterogeneous data integration, HVAC operations, and building maintenance/operation experience. Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at B2-C level is an advantage.

Supervision is listed with Prof. Ivan Depina, Prof. Mohamed Hamdy, Prof. Freja Nygaard Rasmussen, Prof. Sebastien Gros, Dr. Signe Riemer-Sørensen, and Prof. Ahmed Kedir Mohammed. The work will be carried out in Trondheim and involves collaboration with Statsbygg and the aiD research network.
