PhD in Quantum Optimisation Algorithms for Early Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computers Curtin University in Canada

Curtin University is advertising a PhD project in quantum optimisation algorithms for early fault-tolerant quantum computers. The project sits at the intersection of physics, computer science, mathematics, and electrical engineering, with a strong focus on quantum information theory, quantum error correction, quantum circuit optimisation, and resource-efficient algorithm design.

The research aims to develop optimisation protocols that are robust to errors by design and suitable for logical qubits and error-corrected architectures. It also targets practical applications in logistics, AI, engineering, mining, transport, supply chain, finance, pharmaceuticals, defence, and other real-world optimisation problems. The selected PhD candidate may participate in seminars, group meetings, conferences, and collaborative research with domestic and international partners.

The ideal applicant should be eligible for PhD enrolment at Curtin University and have strong analytical and programming skills. Preferred preparation includes a background in theoretical physics or quantum information theory, interest in quantum algorithms for optimisation, Python programming, and familiarity with cloud-based project workflows such as GitHub. The opportunity is open to both domestic and international applicants.

Funding is not guaranteed, but the preferred candidate may be considered for an RTP scholarship. An internship may also be available through the Curtin Centre for Optimisation and Decision Science, which has industry collaborations with organisations such as Alcoa, Roy Hill, Woodside Energy, Global Grain Handling Solutions, and Water Corporation.
