About this position
PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Department of Management in the Built Environment, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.
This project examines how construction firms turn construction software into measurable business value. The research focuses on digital transformation, construction management, project-based organizations, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and field management software, with attention to the organizational and strategic processes behind value realization.
The study will use a comparative multiple-case study design with in-depth empirical work in construction firms undergoing digital transformation. Methods include interviews with executives, IT leaders, digital transformation leads, project managers, and site teams, plus document/data analysis, on-site observation where possible, and a targeted survey of industry decision-makers.
The project is supervised by Daniel Hall, Eleni Papadonikolaki, and Hans Wamelink, and is associated with the DigiConstruct Lab. It also involves an industry sponsor, Hilti, and collaboration with industry partners through meetings, workshops, and fieldwork.
Applicants should hold a master’s degree in a relevant field such as construction management, civil engineering, architecture, built environment studies, management, organisation studies, information systems, or innovation studies. Strong interest in digital transformation and qualitative research is important, along with analytical ability and strong English skills; Dutch is helpful but not required.
The position is a 4-year PhD employment with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The application deadline is 8 September 2026. Apply online with a cover letter, CV, selected academic outputs, a one-minute video introduction, and two references.
