About this position

This fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Strathclyde is part of the EnerHy Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), an EPSRC-funded programme focused on research and training in renewable energy and hydrogen. The project, supported by Siemens Energy and EPSRC, targets the development of advanced Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) strategies for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, including interconnectors and offshore platforms. The research aims to address the increasing demand for robust, availability-driven asset management in high-voltage transmission networks.

As a PhD student, you will investigate failure modes, maintenance philosophies, condition-monitoring requirements, and operational constraints of complex HVDC infrastructure. The project will draw on real-world insights into converter stations, auxiliary systems, and system availability factors. You will develop data-informed methodologies and strategies to enhance long-term reliability, integrate modern maintenance practices, and support evolving operational expectations for HVDC assets within critical energy networks.

The EnerHy CDT offers a comprehensive training and research environment, with the University of Strathclyde leading the wind and renewable energy elements. The studentship is fully funded for four years, covering UK tuition fees and providing a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum. An additional £3,000 per year is available for consumables, travel, and research support. The package also includes a substantial Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) and funding for outreach and development activities.

Applicants should hold a first-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Data Analytics, or a related field. While experience in reliability and maintenance practices is advantageous, it is not essential. The position is open to both UK and overseas/EU applicants, with the application deadline for overseas/EU candidates on 31 May 2026 and for UK candidates until all places are filled or by 31 August 2026.
