About this position
PhD position at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH / Institute for Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9) on Representation and Active Learning for Multi-Scale Scientific Imaging.
The project sits at the interface of artificial intelligence, scientific imaging, and materials research, with a strong focus on machine learning, computer vision, representation learning, active learning, uncertainty modeling, and experimental design. The work will develop multi-scale and multi-modal representations for imaging data such as SEM, TEM, and EBSD, and use them to guide data acquisition and build surrogate models for downstream physical or functional properties.
You will work in a multidisciplinary team with data scientists, software engineers, and experimental researchers, and collaborate closely with partners in electron microscopy and materials discovery. The methods will be validated on large-scale electron microscopy data from collaborative projects, including an EU-funded project on sustainable steel development.
Eligibility highlights: a completed Master’s degree or equivalent in computer science, data science, applied mathematics, physics, materials science, or a related field; solid ML/computer vision background; Python and PyTorch/TensorFlow experience; strong analytical skills; and very good English at B2 CEFR level or higher.
Funding: the position is paid at pay group 13 (80%) TVöD-Bund, initially for 3 years, with additional benefits including annual leave, flexible working, conference participation, and a fully funded extended international research stay.
Location: Aachen and Jülich, Germany. Apply online with a CV, motivation letter, degree records, and certificates. The job is advertised until filled.
