About this position
PhD opportunity in Mallorca at the RiscBal Observatory, University of the Balearic Islands, within the MEDGEORISK project.
This doctoral project focuses on sediment dynamics, flash floods, geomorphology, hydrology, early warning systems, and sediment connectivity in small Mediterranean catchments. The research will study how bedload pulses, channel change, and blockages affect flood conveyance, and will develop operational flood early-warning tools for the Sant Miquel catchment, monitored in real time since 2012.
Research lines include UAV-LiDAR for river sensitivity and sediment connectivity, multi-sensor monitoring coupled with 2D mobile-bed models, and AI-based data fusion and warning thresholds. The project is described as highly competitive and transdisciplinary, with a strong link between basic research and knowledge transfer.
The position is a 4-year, fully funded predoctoral contract (FPI), funded by MICIU/AEI and the ESF+. It also includes a 3–4-month stay abroad at one of the partner institutions: LIST, Reggio Calabria, Pavia, TH Köln, or Durham.
Eligibility highlights: an MSc in geography, environmental sciences, geology, civil/forestry engineering or a related field; GIS skills; and English B2. Applications are open for a short window from 29 October to 11 November 2026.
To apply, prepare your documents in advance and submit them during the application window. For questions, contact [email protected] or visit riscbal.uib.eu.
