About this position

PhD opportunity at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Design School, in semantic segmentation of point cloud data using multi-modal data fusion and deep learning.

The project focuses on computer vision and 3D scene understanding, with applications in autonomous driving, robotics, and smart cities. Research directions include: (1) efficient point-based deep learning algorithms for large-scale point cloud datasets; and (2) image-based approaches that project point clouds into spherical or panoramic representations to leverage recent panoramic deep learning methods.

The successful candidate will work with a unique large-scale benchmark dataset already established by the research group, containing multi-modal point cloud data with manually annotated semantic labels. This provides a strong platform for developing and validating state-of-the-art methods in semantic segmentation, machine learning, and intelligent 3D scene understanding.

This is a funded PhD studentship for three years. It covers tuition fees and includes conference support; living stipends may be available through paid Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant roles. The main research location is XJTLU in Suzhou, China, with possible short-term research visits to the University of Liverpool.

Eligibility highlights: a first-class or upper second-class honours degree, or a master’s degree, in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Geospatial Science, Robotics, or Data Science (or closely related experience); strong Python and deep learning implementation skills; and good English. IELTS 6.5 or above is required if English is not the first language.

Applications are accepted all year round. Interested applicants should email the supervisor with the project title and the requested documents for initial review.
