About this position

Atlantic Technological University’s Clinical Photonics Group at ATU Sligo is offering a fully funded PhD position as part of the SensABLATE programme, a flagship collaborative research initiative funded under the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF). SensABLATE brings together academic, clinical, and industry partners to develop next-generation precision imaging technologies for lung cancer therapy. The project aims to deliver a transformative intraoperative decision-support platform by integrating advanced optical imaging with artificial intelligence, enabling real-time tissue viability assessment and therapy guidance.

Through SensABLATE, ATU will advance translational biophotonics and intelligent imaging platforms toward clinical deployment, strengthening Ireland’s position in next-generation medical device innovation. The research areas include artificial intelligence, data science, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, pathology, physiology, medical physics, and optical physics. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research environment, collaborating with experts across disciplines to push the boundaries of medical imaging and device development.

Applicants must hold a Level 8 Honours degree (First or Second Class) or a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as Laser Physics, Biophotonics, Physics (Applied, Medical, or Optical Physics), Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Medical Imaging, or Computational Imaging. Essential skills include experience with machine learning and image analysis, and familiarity with scientific computing and data processing workflows. Desirable skills include experience with PyTorch and/or TensorFlow, background or interest in biomedical optics, hyperspectral imaging, laser-based sensing, or medical imaging systems, knowledge of real-time systems, embedded processing, or computational optimisation, and an interest in interdisciplinary research bridging physics, engineering, and healthcare.

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of meeting ATU’s postgraduate minimum (IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, minimum 5.5 in each component, or recognised equivalent). The position is based at ATU Sligo and is expected to start on May 1, 2026, with a duration of three years.

Funding for this PhD is provided by Atlantic Technological University and Enterprise Ireland. The package includes a €25,000 per annum stipend, full coverage of postgraduate fees for both EU and non-EU students, and coverage of any necessary travel and material costs incurred during the project.

To apply, submit your CV (including contact details of two referees), transcript of results, and a personal statement (maximum one page) outlining your qualifications and motivation for pursuing this PhD. All documents should be emailed as a single Word or PDF file to [email protected] before the application deadline of April 14, 2026.
