The project sits at the intersection of genetics, cardiovascular disease, epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical data science, using large-scale genetic and health registry data to study sex-specific differences in stroke risk among patients with atrial fibrillation.

The research will be carried out in close collaboration with CLINDA – Center for Clinical Data Science and the Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University. Methods mentioned include Mendelian randomization, genetic association analysis, and other causal inference approaches aimed at improving risk prediction and prevention strategies.

This is a three-year PhD stipend funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The position is available from October 1, 2026 or soon thereafter. Applicants should have an MSc in statistics, genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics, clinical data science, medicine, or a related field, plus programming skills in R, Python, or similar. Experience with large genetic datasets is preferred, and strong English communication skills are required.

As part of the PhD programme, the student will complete 30 ECTS of PhD courses, gain teaching or dissemination experience, and undertake an external research stay outside Aalborg University, preferably for 3–6 months at a foreign research institution.
