About this position

Ghent University is recruiting a PhD/doctoral fellow in soil compaction mapping and remediation within the interdisciplinary project Detection and Remediation of Soil Compaction.

The project combines remote sensing, proximal sensing, field measurements, and machine learning to develop and validate methods for mapping soil compaction at field scale. The research also evaluates innovative soil management and remediation techniques under practical farming conditions, with a strong focus on climate-resilient agriculture.

The position is based at Ghent University (Campus Coupure) with a workplace also at Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO) in Merelbeke, Belgium. The consortium includes Ghent University, ILVO, Viaverda, and the Belgian Soil Service.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Bioscience, Agricultural Engineering, Soil Science, Geography, Geology, or a related discipline. The post asks for a strong interest in agriculture and horticulture, basic soil physics knowledge, good English, and willingness to undertake a short research stay abroad. Python, MATLAB, or similar computational experience is an advantage.

This is a full-time doctoral fellowship for 12 months initially, extendable up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship is described as 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances, with tax treatment under doctoral fellowship regulations.

Apply by 25 August 2026, 11:59 PM CEST by email to [email protected] with your CV, master’s diploma (if available), academic transcripts, and motivation letter. Use the subject line Application PhD DEREBO.
