About this position

PhD opportunity at Utrecht University in Spatial Optimization of Land Use in Brazil, based in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning within the Faculty of Geosciences.

This PhD is part of the project Frontiers of MATOPIBA landscapes, which studies how agricultural production and biodiversity conservation can be balanced in Brazil’s MATOPIBA region under future climate and socio-economic conditions. The project focuses on land use, spatial optimization, Pareto frontiers, uncertainty assessment, stakeholder preferences, biodiversity conservation, agricultural production, climate change, and policy-relevant decision support.

The successful candidate will travel to Brazil to engage with stakeholders, translate preferences into quantifiable indicators, develop spatial optimization algorithms, compute Pareto frontiers across scenarios, and write academic articles and policy documents. The role is strongly interdisciplinary and combines environmental science, geography, geoinformatics, computer science, and quantitative spatial analysis.

Funding: The position is fully funded through the Dutch Research Agenda and the Brazilian research council CNPq. It is offered for 1 year initially, with extension to 4 years upon successful assessment. Salary is €3,204–€4,051 gross per month for full-time work, plus holiday pay and year-end bonus.

Eligibility: Applicants should have an MSc degree in or near completion of Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Quantitative Geography, Spatial/Geographic Data Science, Environmental Science, or a related field. Experience with spatial data and Python and/or R is required, along with strong English and teamwork skills. Experience with spatial optimization, land-use impact assessment, and Portuguese is desirable.

Deadline: 13 October 2026. Interviews are planned for 27 October 2026, and the intended start date is 1 January 2027.

How to apply: Use the Utrecht University application portal and submit a CV plus motivation letter. Contact Judith Verstegen at [email protected] for more information.
