About this position

PhD opportunity at Loughborough University in the Department of Physics on spectrally pure topological microcombs, with a strong focus on photonics, optics, nonlinear optics, integrated photonics, quantum mechanics, experimental physics, and related computational/AI-enabled methods.

This funded project is part of a collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and aims to develop extremely low-noise optical sources (microcombs) for precision timing and metrology-ready quantum timing devices. The student will work with the Emergent Photonics Research Centre and will complete two six-month placements at NPL during the studentship.

Supervision is by Prof Alessia Pasquazi and Dr Antonio Cutrona at Loughborough, with Dr Jacob Tunesi as external supervisor at NPL. The project is linked to UK quantum missions and broader research themes including ultrafast photonics, optical frequency combs in microresonators, AI for photonics, and terahertz technologies.

Funding is for 4 years and includes a tax-free stipend of £25,555 per annum plus tuition fees at UK or International rate, along with support for conference travel, lab materials, and an industry placement. International tuition fees are not covered.

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent). The advert welcomes students from STEM backgrounds such as physics, engineering, applied mathematics, and advanced mechanics, and applicants must meet the university’s English language requirements.

To apply, submit an online application through Loughborough University, select Campus: Loughborough and Programme: Physics, and quote reference AQ/PH/2026-02. The closing date is 16 October 2026.
