About this position

Karolinska Institutet is advertising a doctoral student position in statistics/biostatistics focused on the early detection of cancer in primary care. The position is based in the STEADY-CAN (Stockholm Early Detection of Cancer Study) research group within the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS).

The project combines traditional statistical modelling and machine learning for applied cancer research using linked laboratory, medical record, and registry data from a large Stockholm cohort. The doctoral student will work on survival analysis, prediction modelling, data preparation, statistical analysis, implementation of machine learning methods, scientific writing, and participation in seminars and conferences.

Applicants should have a strong background in statistics/biostatistics or mathematical statistics. Meritorious experience includes survival analysis, data handling, statistical analysis in a medical research environment, and programming in R. Experience with Swedish register data is also valued. Because the database and documentation are in Swedish, good Swedish in speech and writing is required, and good English is also required.

Eligibility requires an advanced degree (master’s level or equivalent) or at least 240 higher education credits including 60 at advanced level, plus documented English proficiency equivalent to English 6/B. The role is a full-time doctoral student employment for up to 4 years with a monthly salary according to KI’s doctoral salary scale.

To apply, use the Varbi application portal and submit a personal letter, CV, degree theses/publications, and documents proving both general and specific eligibility as well as the requested skills and qualities. The application deadline is 2026-11-15.
