About this position
PhD opportunity in Statistics at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, focused on functional data analysis, functional time series, and time-varying network structures. The project addresses statistical challenges in complex dynamic data such as brain signals, economic curves, and other function-valued observations where temporal dependence, non-stationarity, and non-Euclidean structure can make standard methods unreliable.
You will develop new statistical methodology and software for estimating dependence structures, detecting structural changes, constructing time-varying networks, and controlling false connections in scientific data. The research is theoretical and methodological, but it is closely connected to applications in neuroscience, anomaly detection, process monitoring, weather and climate forecasting, and statistical bioinformatics.
The PhD candidate will join the Statistics, Probability and Operations Research (SPOR) cluster in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at TU/e. The environment is collaborative and interdisciplinary, with links to external partners and a strong research culture in time series analysis, functional data, and network analysis. The project is suited to candidates who enjoy mathematical statistics, rigorous proofs, computational implementation, and application-oriented research.
Supervision is by Lujia Bai and Prof. dr. Jeanine Duistermaat. The candidate is expected to publish in international scientific journals, participate in international conferences, and develop an independent research profile.
Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, or a related subject; fluent English at C1 level; good programming skills in R or Python; experience with C++; and beneficial background in time series analysis, functional data analysis, or functional analysis. Teaching and student-coaching development are also part of the role.
Funding is provided through a full-time employment contract for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary follows Dutch university scale P, with a gross monthly salary of €3,204 to €4,051 for full-time work, plus an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.
The application deadline is 2026-10-18. Applicants must apply online and submit a cover letter, CV, publication list, and contact details for three references. Email or postal applications are not processed.
