About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Strathclyde within the SATURN CDT on Sustainable Nuclear Landscapes: Place, Just Transitions, and Long-Term Stewardship in UK Nuclear Communities under Decommissioning.

This project explores how UK nuclear communities and landscapes change as facilities move into decommissioning. It focuses on nuclear decommissioning, place-based regeneration, just transitions, long-term stewardship, human geography, urban planning, sociology, and related social-spatial questions. The research will examine land use change, mobility, infrastructure, community identity, social value, governance, and future reuse of post-nuclear sites.

The student will use mixed methods, including mapping, fieldwork, interviews, focus groups, policy analysis, participatory workshops, and scenario co-design with communities and stakeholders. Outputs will include a practical toolkit, policy briefs, and evidence for local authorities, planners, public bodies, and policymakers.

The project is based at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, United Kingdom, and is part of the SATURN Centre for Doctoral Training consortium. Training includes a nuclear boot camp, taught courses, research skills development, secondments, site visits, leadership training, and public engagement opportunities.
