About this position
PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the area of radiation-triggered block copolymer micelles, with a strong focus on chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, and biomedical engineering.
The project is part of a large national consortium developing nanoparticle-based immunotherapy for cancer treatment. The successful candidate will design, synthesize, and characterize radiation-sensitive block copolymers that self-assemble into micelles, then test their ability to encapsulate and release immunotherapeutic agents. The work includes building a library of block copolymers with different block lengths, structures, and radiation-sensitive linkers, evaluating radiation-induced polymer degradation and cargo release, and carrying out initial cell studies.
The project is a collaboration between the groups of prof. Rienk Eelkema (Chemical Engineering) and prof. Antonia Denkova (Radiation Science and Technology) at TU Delft’s Faculty of Applied Sciences.
Eligibility highlights: MSc degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or equivalent; proven expertise in multistep organic synthesis; experience in purification and characterization of organic molecules; desirable experience in polymer synthesis, polymer characterization, and physical chemistry; strong teamwork skills; high-level written and spoken English.
Funding and conditions: This is a paid PhD employment position for 4 years in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract and a second 2.5-year contract subject to progress. Salary ranges from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also offers health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.
Application deadline: 26 October 2026. Apply online via the application button, upload a CV and motivational letter, and address the application to prof. Rienk Eelkema. Email applications are not accepted.
