About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of St Andrews in the School of Chemistry with Dr Euan Kay.
This project is centered on synthetic supramolecular chemistry, nanochemistry, and nanomaterials, with a strong emphasis on reaction- and interaction-enabled nanoparticles. Research themes include dynamic covalent nanoparticles, selective nanoparticle assembly, hybrid materials, and chemically instructed reaction networks that can show life-like behaviors such as replication and autonomous switching.
Students will work on nanoscale building blocks and study how covalent reactions and noncovalent interactions behave under confinement. The project is especially relevant to applicants interested in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology.
Training includes hands-on experience with NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, TEM, DLS, TGA, physical-organic kinetics methods, data analysis, and possibly computational simulation of molecular and nanoscale structures and reaction networks. The group is based in modern synthetic chemistry facilities with access to world-class instrumentation.
Funding: competition-funded for worldwide, EU, or UK students. Self-funded applicants are also welcome and may use the St Andrews Handsel scheme to bridge home/international fee differences.
How to apply: register your interest as soon as possible via the project page. Informal enquiries can be sent to Dr Euan Kay at ek28@st-andrews.ac.uk or to chem-pg@st-andrews.ac.uk for application guidance.
