About this position

The PhD programme in Systems Neuroscience at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover is designed for the interdisciplinary advancement of young researchers in the rapidly evolving field of neurobiology. The curriculum is broad in both content and methodology, ensuring students receive solid training in general neurobiology and are exposed to the many aspects of systems neuroscience. The programme avoids excessive specialisation, maintaining a focus on basic knowledge while linking theoretical and clinical sciences through courses taught jointly by professors from both disciplines.

Students can tailor their individualised course of study from a catalogue of required and elective courses, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature and integration of basic and applied neurosciences. The programme is supported by the Center for Systems Neuroscience (ZSN), with courses covering cellular and molecular neuroscience, sensory systems (auditory, olfactory, visual), cognitive and behavioural systems, limbic systems, motor systems, clinical applications, biometrics, biophysics, animal welfare, and more.

Course organisation is based on experimental research in project-oriented, interdisciplinary courses and seminars, with a strong research focus. The PhD Commission, in collaboration with ZSN working groups, establishes the curriculum, which includes both obligatory and elective courses. Students actively participate in seminars, doctoral study groups, and annual colloquia, presenting posters and lectures on their research progress. The final requirement is a public thesis defense.

International elements include training in intercultural skills, projects with partners in Germany and abroad, and financial support for visits to partner laboratories. Integrated German language courses are available, and the programme is taught entirely in English. The supervisor-student ratio is three supervisors per PhD student, ensuring structured research and supervision.

Applicants must hold a university degree in veterinary medicine, medicine, dental medicine, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or another natural science. Degrees from non-German universities can be recognised as equivalent. Outstanding academic achievement and motivation are required, and applicants must demonstrate complete fluency in English. The application deadline is 1 September, with the programme starting in the winter semester, though enrolment is also possible in the summer semester.

There are no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of about 390 EUR covers public transportation within Germany. No internal funding opportunities are available. Support for international students includes welcome events, specialist counselling, visa assistance, accommodation help, and registration support.

For more information and to apply, visit the DAAD programme page or contact the programme via email. The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover offers a vibrant academic environment for research in systems neuroscience.
