About this position

PhD opportunity in Technology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)

The Department of Energy and Technology at SLU is recruiting a PhD student for a project titled “Accounting for Unexpected Events When Optimizing the Climate Effects of Broadleaf Tree Production.” The research focuses on how production systems for fast-growing broadleaf trees can be adapted to a future with increasing risks from unexpected events such as fires, storms, and insect attacks, and how these disturbances affect climate outcomes.

The project is part of Trees for Me, a competence center focused on fast-growing broadleaves such as poplar, aspen, hybrid aspen, and birch for sustainable forests, materials, and energy. The center brings together academic, research, enterprise, and public-sector partners to develop resilient forest biomass supply systems and build future competence for the forest-based value chain.

Research themes include forestry, agriculture, environmental science, risk analysis, life cycle assessment (LCA), modeling, bio-based products, and energy systems. The doctoral student is expected to read and critically evaluate scientific literature in English, publish and present results in journals and conferences, participate in doctoral courses, and contribute to departmental activities.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent; at least 240 credits total with 60 credits at second-cycle level; technology-related coursework equivalent to 90 credits; an independent thesis; and English proficiency equivalent to Engelska B/6. A Master of Science in Forestry, Engineering, Natural resource economics, or a related field is preferred. Strong communication skills in English are required, and experience in agriculture and forestry, bio-based products and energy, risk analysis, and LCA/modeling is meritorious.

Funding: employment as a doctoral student for 4 years, with salary according to the local collective agreement and fixed salary progression.

Location: Uppsala, Sweden.
