About this position

PhD opportunity at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Solvay Business School, together with the Faculty of Languages and Humanities, are recruiting a PhD student with a doctoral grant for the newly created Brussels Centre for Interdisciplinary Resistance Studies (Inter-RESIST).

The project sits at the intersection of digital humanities, media and communication studies, literary studies, translation studies, and interdisciplinary cultural research. It examines how resistance is enacted and mediated across time and media, using archival, textual, visual, and digital sources. Research themes include everyday resistance, constructive resistance, reverse discourse, and networked dissent, with attention to civilian resistance in Belgium and transnationally, including resistance to the Holocaust, post-war racism, and genocide against Palestinians and their historical antecedents.

The PhD topic combines computational content analysis, discourse analysis, and cultural transfer methodologies to study the discursive and performative dimensions of resistance. Possible corpora include underground literature, clandestine publications, diaries, memoirs, graffiti, documentary film, visual testimony, social media activism, digital campaigns, and artistic responses to oppression and political violence.

The successful candidate will have a joint affiliation with the research groups ECHO: Media, Culture & Politics and CLIC: Centre for Literary & Intermedial Crossings, and will work closely with Prof. Arvi Sepp, Prof. Kevin Smets, and Prof. Yazan Badran. The role also includes active contribution to research funding acquisition and participation in interdisciplinary exchanges across History, Sociology, Literary Studies, Communication Studies, and Political Science.

The home base is the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene). This is a funded doctoral position with a doctoral grant.
