About this position

Utrecht University is offering a 4-year PhD position on the politicization of university knowledge and education, based in the Faculty of Geosciences and the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning, with close collaboration with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development.

This interdisciplinary project examines how science, universities, and education become politicized, especially in the context of geosciences and sustainability. Research themes include the politicization of academic knowledge, science-society relations, controversial topics in higher education, classroom discussions, and methods for facilitating sensitive-topic dialogue. The project is especially relevant for students interested in Science and Technology Studies (STS), Political Science, Educational Sciences, Geography, and Sustainability Studies.

The PhD candidate will develop both qualitative and quantitative research skills and work in an interdisciplinary team of researchers and educators. The role is based in Utrecht, Netherlands, and the university highlights its strong research environment in sustainability and social sciences.

Eligibility: a Research Master’s or Master’s degree in STS, Political Science, Educational Sciences, Geography, Sustainability Studies, or a related field; strong English communication skills; understanding of qualitative and quantitative methods; ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting. Dutch proficiency is preferred but not required.

Funding: fully funded PhD position with a gross monthly salary of €3,059–€3,881, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, leave benefits, and professional development opportunities.

Deadline: 27 July 2026. First interview round is scheduled for week 35 (24–30 August 2026). Applicants should apply through the university portal with a CV including grades and a motivation letter (max. 2 pages).
