About this position

University of Antwerp is hiring a full-time PhD researcher in thermal energy system optimization. The doctoral project is part of a broader collaboration with Ghent University and KU Leuven focused on the implementation of high-temperature heat pumps in industrial chemical batch processes.

The research will study how to integrate heat pumps into industrial processes while accounting for transient heating and cooling demands. The PhD will develop a design and optimization methodology covering the integration architecture (including heat pump, thermal energy storage, and possibly e-boilers), component sizing, and control strategy. The position is based in the Department of Electromechanical Engineering and the EMIB (Energy and Materials in Infrastructure and Buildings) research group.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in Electromechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with excellent study results. Experience in analysis and modelling of thermal energy systems is a plus, and strong English skills are required. The role includes doctoral research, reporting to supervisors and committees, conference presentations, publication goals, and limited teaching/research support tasks.

The scholarship is initially for one year and can be renewed annually after positive evaluation for up to four years total. The monthly stipend follows the University of Antwerp doctoral scholarship scale, and additional benefits include ecocheques, internet allowance, and commuting support. The planned start date is 1 September 2026 or soon after.

Apply online through the University of Antwerp application platform by 2026-07-09 (midnight Brussels time). Submit a motivation letter and CV. For application-form questions contact [email protected]; for position-specific questions contact prof. Ilya T’Jollyn at [email protected].
